On Jan. 9, Colorado Springs, Colo., Mayor Steve Bach honored engineering students from Falcon School District 49ís Sand Creek High School; presenting them with the Spirit of the Springs Celebration Award. The 22 junior and senior students are part of the schoolís InvenTeam, which is led by Todd Matia, Project Lead The Way instructor at Sand Creek. The group is the first in Colorado to receive the Lemelson-MIT program grant, totaling $9,900 for inventing technological solutions to real-world problems.Bach presented the Spirit of the Springs Celebration Award to Matia, who said he and his team are excited to continue inventing projects like the one that garnered the award. The team developed a bio-sand filtration system that uses natural resources, typically found in developing countries, to filter water, he said.In June, InvenTeam students will travel to the EurekaFest at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology In Cambridge, Mass., to present their prototype, Matia said.
