Basketball season wrap up

D 49 boys basketballSand Creek High SchoolFebruary is the last month of regular season high school basketball, and the Sand Creek Scorpions seem to be in the best position for post season playoffs at this point. However, January ended with two straight losses, and the Scorpions played a difficult game against Air Academy Feb. 4. This game did not go the Scorpions way, and stretched their losing streak to three games, in part because of a horrid 22 turnovers. They then traveled to Discovery Canyon Feb. 6 to try to snap the losing streak. Sand Creek scraped by, winning 44-40. After that, they headed east to play a district game against Falcon on Feb. 11. They easily won 58-46, securing a season sweep for the Scorpions. On Feb. 13, they played Cheyenne Mountain at home and almost pulled off an upset, but the Scorpions lost the nail-biter, 67-69. Senior Cody Fox led the Scorpions in scoring, with 21 points. For the last district game of the season Feb. 20, Sand Creek squared off against Vista Ridge. The game went as predicted, with the Scorpions winning 51-43.Vista RidgeComing off of a stunning win against Falcon at the end of January, the Vista Ridge Wolves hoped to carry some of that momentum into the last six games of the season, but it didnít happen. On Feb. 4, in the second quarter of the game against Lewis Palmer, the Wolves scored zero points, which led to a 9-point loss at home. On Feb. 6, they played a struggling Cheyenne Mountain team and won in a high scoring 76-70 game. Sophomore H. Maldonado had a terrific game, coming away with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Five days later, Vista Ridge played a tough Air Academy team and dropped their second home game in a row, 54-46. After four straight home games, they traveled to Palmer Ridge Feb. 12, and lost in a blowout 48-29. They followed with two more losses ó against Discovery Canyon on Feb. 18 and Sand Creek on Feb. 20, which brought their season ending record to 9-14.Falcon High SchoolFalcon High School hoped to improve on their mediocre season with a solid February. On Feb. 4, they won a hard-fought contest against Palmer Ridge in a low scoring game, 40-39. The next game against Lewis-Palmer Feb. 6 was just as exciting, with the back-and-forth game won by Falcon, 61-59. After their game against the Scorpions, they played against 4A heavyweight Air Academy Feb. 13, and lost by 23 points. On Feb. 18, they bounced back to win against Cheyenne Mountain by 9 points, 77-68. On Feb. 20, the stands were packed at Falcon High School for senior night. They didnít disappoint the fans, with a 77-54 win over Discovery Canyon.D 49 girls basketballSand CreekThe Sand Creek girls basketball team started February with a seven-game winning streak, hoping for a chance in postseason. They started off Feb. 2 on the right foot by beating Cheyenne Mountain by a whopping 40 points, 94-54. Junior Oliana Squires was the teamís leading scorer, with 28 points. They then followed with a 53-35 win against Air Academy, and returned home Feb. 6 with an 81-42 win over Discovery Canyon. Riding a 14-game winning streak, they played Vista Ridge Feb. 20 and took care of business, with a 79-38 major win, bumping their Colorado 4A rankings to No. 8.Vista Ridge Vista Ridge, on the other hand, has had a sub-par year on the basketball court. However, things looked as if they were turning around when the Wolves opened in February, with back-to-back wins against Lewis-Palmer on Feb. 4 and Cheyenne Mountain on Feb. 6. The momentum did not last long, as they turned around to lose their next four games to Air Academy on Feb. 11, Palmer Ridge on Feb. 12, Discovery Canyon on the 18th, and Sand Creek on the 20th. The Wolves ended their season with a rather dismal record, 6-17.Falcon High SchoolThe Falcons started the month slightly ahead of Vista Ridge at 9-7 on the year. But they fell victim to the same February woes as the Wolves. Falcon won their first two games against Palmer Ridge Feb. 4, and Lewis-Palmer on Feb. 6, and they lost the next four against Sand Creek (Feb. 11), Air Academy (Feb. 13), Cheyenne Mountain (Feb. 18) and Discovery Canyon (Feb. 20), which brought their record to an even .500, just enough to earn them a playoff spot.
