James and Lavonne Hidy were presented the AARP and NRTA (AARP’s educator community) Unit Community Service Award at the April 13 Black Forest AARP chapter meeting. The national award recognized their exemplary service as volunteers in the community. The award certificate and commemorative pins were accompanied by a letter of appreciation signed by W. Lee Hammond, AARP national president, and Addison Barry Rand, AARP chief executive officer.Jim and Lavonne Hidy have been active in the Black Forest AARP Chapter No. 1100 as treasurer and board member. They are longstanding Wolford Elementary School and local church volunteers; as well as “Friends of the Black Forest Log School,” a historical organization. They are also life members of the Black Forest Community Club and recipients of the Community Service Award and “Keeper of the Keys of Black Forest.” The Hidy’s established a successful monthly senior social event at a local church, volunteered at the Black Forest Care and Share Food Pantry and helped organize Christmas boxes for elders at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Their dedication and service has significantly enhanced the welfare of the community and its residents.The Black Forest AARP Chapter meets the second Wednesday of every month at noon.
