A Flair for Hair

The first thing one notices upon entering A Flair for Hair salon is how homey it is. The salon is located off the front entryway of a residential home in Falcon Hills. Beautifully designed by owner Deanna Hooker, it has a large bay window for natural light and a cozy area for clients to relax and read the latest gossip magazines or choose a new hairstyle from numerous design books. On one wall is a large bulletin board with the business cards of many of her clients. “I’ve always believed that women should network together and help each other prosper,” Deanna said.”This is what I have dreamed of for many years,” Deanna said. “I wanted my own salon where women could come in and feel at home.” She prefers to use only her first name “for obvious reasons,” Deanna laughed. A second-generation Colorado Springs native, Deanna always knew she would make a career out of working with women. “I always loved fashion, design and hair,” she said. “I love to make women feel beautiful and giving a woman the perfect hairstyle and/or color can do wonders for her self confidence.”Deanna began her career 13 years ago as a stylist for Joslins’ department store. After five years, she had built up a substantial clientele and started her own business renting a booth at Elite Salon in Colorado Springs, where she also continues to serve clients two days a week. “Many of my clients have been with me over eight years and I didn’t want to lose them, so for now I’ll continue to work part-time at Elite,” Deanna said. “At some point though, I will only work out of my salon here in Falcon.”Deanna moved to Falcon two years ago and opened her salon within 18 months. “I moved to Falcon because I loved the country and needed more room for my dogs,” Deanna said. “I also wanted a place large enough for me to build a salon and that also would be convenient for my clients to get to.” Deanna is a single mother of three. Her oldest is age 24 and lives in Colorado Springs. She has a 17-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter who live at home. “I work six days a week so with two teenagers it’s nice to be able to work from home at least part of the week,” Deanna said.Deanna refers to her salon as “little Las Vegas.” “What’s said in here stays in here,” she said. Her clients confide in her. “I’ve been through marriages, divorces, children and their problems, deaths, you name it with my clients,” Deanna said. “A woman’s hair stylist is much more than just someone she goes to for a cut or color. It’s a very personal relationship for many women and I take that trust very seriously. I do have male clients and enjoy them too, but my relationship with female clients is special.”Deanna attends hair shows twice a year to keep up with the latest styles. “For 2005, red hair is really in for color,” Deanna said. “Coloring and highlights are one of my specialties. For cuts, it’s definitely the flip for longer hair or for short hair, the razor bob.” Deanna also specializes in “updo’s” for weddings and proms. “I love doing weddings and proms. Being part of such special events for my clients is such an honor for me,” Deanna said. “After all, my goal has always been to have my clients leave looking and feeling beautiful and uplifted.”For more information on A Flair for Hair, visit the Website at www.aflair4hair.com.
