Safety tip - Off duty, he is sometimes “Mr. Mom”

Lt. David Hawkins of the Falcon Fire Protection District worked as a line cook before a ride-along with the Colorado Springs Fire Department persuaded him to become a firefighter. He became a volunteer firefighter with the FFPD in 2004 and a paid firefighter in 2010. Hawkins said the thing he likes best about his job is the unpredictability. He said every day is different and no call is the same.

Hawkins said he likes to spend his off-duty hours with his wife and two children. Since his wife has a full-time job, he spends many of his off-duty hours as “Mr. Mom.”

Hawkins’ fire safety tip for November: In preparation for an emergency, make an escape plan from your house with two ways out and have a designated meeting place outside the house.
