Durango is among the Top 10 Christmas towns in the entire country. Throughout the month of December, the town is filled with festive music, dazzling lights and monthlong events, including the Polar Express train ride, run by the town’s famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Just north of town is the Purgatory Resort, which offers great skiing and other winter activities. Telluride (Hotel Prices & Photos)
  • Ouray, in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its dramatic peaks and ice climbing adventures. The city is home to the world’s first-ever ice climbing park. The seven-week Winterfest celebration that begins at Thanksgiving features the Victorian and old-west style buildings speckled with flickering Christmas lights and seasonal decor. Every weekend, there is a different event such as the ugly sweater dance. Soaking in the mineral springs could be a welcome relief from the holiday stress.
  • Closer to home is Cripple Creek, which could relieve stress or add to it, depending on one’s luck at the casinos. During the holidays, the old mining town features the Butte Theatre’s holiday-themed melodramas and the many historic buildings all dressed up and all lit up for the season. Experience the nightly Gold Camp Christmas Holiday Headframe Lighting and the Winter Wonderland every weekend at the Cripple Creek District Museum. A Christmas parade with appearances from Santa, activities for kids, s’mores and marshmallows roasting on an open fire, and free hot chocolate and cider during the Gold Camp Christmas Weekend makes this a worthwhile trip for your holiday fun.
  • Georgetown is close, too — just an hour west of Denver. This victorian mining town goes all out for Christmas: chestnuts roasting on an open fire and vintage horse carriage rides, along with the annual Historic Georgetown Christmas Market, which features unique, hard-to-find gifts.
