Union Blvd.Artist Terry Barber, a retired teacher who has collected items from around the world, will display collage works and greeting cards that show creativity with stamps, watercolor, ephemera and mixed media.March 1-31 – East LibrarySENIOR CONNECTION programs in MarchAARP Mature Safe Driving ProgramThe AARP Mature Safe Driving Program is the nation’s first and largest classroom driver refresher course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. Upon successfully completing the course, graduates may present their course completion certificate to their insurance agents for a discount. A minimum of 10 students is required. The eight-hour course is $10. Class size is limited, and registration is required. Presentations include “Positive Discipline: Dealing with Emotional and Behavior Issues,” “Taking Care of Yourself,” and “Legal Issues.” There will be community resource booths, door prizes and (limited) day care for children in kindergarten through fifth grade only. “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” is a free workshop sponsored by the Senior Resource Council Education Committee and Pikes Peak Library District.Call 444-5226 to register. Works include F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” John Dos Passos’ “The Big Money” (the third novel in his U.S.A trilogy), and Robert Penn Warren’s “All the King’s Men.” Participate in discussions on the main ideas, characters, plots, conflicts, language and settings of the novels. This free educational class is offered through a partnership with the PILLAR Institute for Lifelong Learning and Pikes Peak Library District. Includes incorporation, IRS and Colorado Secretary of State guidelines and criteria, board roles and the seven mandatory functions of successful nonprofits. The workshop will be lead by Brinah Acton, vice president of organizational development for the Center for Nonprofit Excellence. Call 531-6333, x 1207 for more information.Colorado Fifth Congressional District arts competitionThis arts competition for high school students in grades nine through 12 is open to each high school in the Fifth Congressional District. Students may submit up to five works of two-dimensional art created during the 2005-2006 school year. This year’s theme is “The Artists Choice.” The artwork must be no larger than 30 inches-by-30 inches, unframed, or 32 inches-by-32 inches, framed. Only paintings, drawings and prints will be accepted. Art will be exhibited in the East Library art gallery from April 3 to 28. A reception will be held April 22 at the East Library to recognize winners. Student entry forms will be accepted through March 15. Artwork must be delivered between March 13 and March 28 to 104 S. Cascade, Colorado Springs. Through March 20, children can earn a voucher to “Disney on Ice Presents Princess Classics” by reading seven books about fairy tales or other royal fanfare and completing a reading log, signed by parents or guardians. Reading logs are available at PPLD locations during the promotion.
