New county internal auditor

Salena DiMatteo has been named the new internal auditor for El Paso County. DiMatteo is a certified public accountant, with more than 16 years of local professional experience. Seven of those years were spent as an internal auditor for the U.S. Olympic Committee. DiMatteo also worked for seven years at the local firm, Biggs, Kofford & Co., as a CPA. She has a bachelor’s in accounting and a master’s in business and leadership and human resource management from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.”I look forward to working with the various county departments,” DiMatteo said. “Internal audits can be a great tool to assist directors in determining that operations are functioning as intended. This will provide added assurance that assets are protected and being utilized for maximum benefit.”Internal audits help ensure that operations are effective, efficient and adhere to established policies, and will assist in identifying risks and ensuring that controls are in place to minimize those risks, according to a county news release. The auditor’s office will evaluate areas, such as internal controls, records, operations, policies, procurements and the effectiveness and efficiency of organizational operations. Internal audit offices are commonly used in cities and counties throughout the state and the nation to provide an added safeguard of government assets.
