Rosemary Bakes-Martin, El Paso County’s public health administrator and Falcon resident, was honored by the El Paso County Board of Commissioners in February.According to a county news release, Bakes-Martin, as a research scientist, educator and community leader, is “dedicated to the protection and improvement of public health.””One of our key roles is to protect the public’s health and safety,” said board chairwoman Sallie Clark. “It’s very reassuring to have all of the knowledge and professionalism that Rosemary embodies at the helm of the health department.”The Colorado House of Representatives also recognized Bakes-Martin in late January for her 25-year career protecting and improving public health. Rep. Mark Cloer cited her efforts to plan for emergency and pandemic flu situations and protect the community against the West Nile virus.”Rosemary Bakes-Martin’s commitment to protecting public health is unprecedented,” Cloer said.Bakes-Martin was hired as the deputy director for the El Paso County Department of Health and Environment in August 2000. She became the director in February 2002. She holds a master’s degree in laboratory medicine from the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine and a master’s degree in public health from Emory University.
