County handles leftover paint and household chemical waste

Solid Waste Management, a division of the El Paso County Environmental Services Department, operates a permanent facility for dropping off items, such as paint and paint-related products, lawn and garden chemicals, household products and cleaners, automotive products, expired medications, propane cylinders, ammunition and fireworks. The facility is open year-round, and El Paso and Teller County residents can dispose of their household chemical waste at no charge by appointment only.Also, a house-bound or senior person can request pickup free of charge. The facility does not accept automotive batteries and tires.The El Paso County Fleet Management Department also accepts used motor oil, and residents can participate in the yard waste collection program every Saturday.The county commissioners established the Solid Waste Management Fund in 1990 to effectively deal with environmental and recycling issues. The county commissioners approved three contract renewals with organizations that dispose the products brought to the facility: Recyclers LLC, Rocky Top Resources, Inc. and Clean Harbors Environmental Services.For more information on the recycling programs, call 520-7878.
