El Paso court judicial complex almost completed

The new east entrance main lobby of the El Paso County Terry R. Harris Judicial Complex at 270 S. Tejon St. will open Jan. 3.The lobby will service the old courthouse section, which will be known as the south tower, and the new section (the west tower), once it’s complete. This will be the only public entryway since the current one on the south side will be closed.The new lobby entrance will decrease the long lines. Three security stations are manned in the lobby, which will be open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on holidays.Security will no longer hold items that are not allowed into the building. Items not allowed will have to be taken out of the building or thrown away. To avoid security check delays or losing an item, beware of the some of the following items not allowed inside the courthouse.

  • Firearms
  • Knives
  • Scissors
  • Screwdrivers
  • Stun guns
  • Mace
  • Tear gas
  • Pepper spray
  • Razors and razor blades
  • Hand cuffs
  • Nail files
  • Ice picks
  • Darts
  • Large safety pins
  • Metal combs and hair picks
  • Ammunition
  • Pointed can and bottle openers
  • Impact weapons
  • Or any other items that could be used to cause severe injury and bodily harm if used as a weapon.
The completed courthouse is scheduled to open March 6, 2006. However, as tenants vacate older sections to move into the new area, minor interior modifications will occur in some of the older parts.The parking garage for the courthouse complex is estimated to open Aug. 1 at the corner of Costilla and Tejon streets, with the entrance off Costilla Street.
