County adds conservation easement

El Paso County is adding another parcel of land to its list of conservation easements. At the Dec. 30 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board approved 30 acres of conservation easement from Blodgett Trails, LLC.The land is undeveloped and located between the Pike National Forest and west Woodmen Road. The area is a relatively high-growth area, so the piece is desirable as open space for the county.A conservation easement is a way for the county to gain open space without having to spend taxpayer dollars to purchase land. There are generally limits on the types of activities that can occur on an easement property, including mining and clear cutting, and the amount of development allowed. However, the landowner still owns the property and can sell the property, continue farming activities and/or use the property for recreational purposes.
