Winter sports are underway

The Falcon High School winter sports season is well on its way. From triumphant wins to heartbreaking losses, the Falcons won’t let up. The girls’ basketball team has a collective record of 16-10 with a big win over district rival Sand Creek. The boys’ basketball team is continually working hard and playing their best every time they step onto the court. Finally, wrestling has had an amazing season thus far, and still going strong. The girls’ basketball team has played many exhilarating games, including one against Sierra on Jan. 11. The Lady Falcons started strong and played their hearts out throughout the entire game. At halftime, the score was 23-23, with a long second half to play. With numerous controversial calls by referees, the Falcon fans showed their disappointment. Junior Sadie Maughan racked up 16 points, and sophomore Ally Goniea led the team with 12 rebounds. Despite their outstanding efforts, the Lady Falcons fell short with a final score of 44 to 51. However, they never put their heads down and continue to strive for success. When asked how their season was going thus far, senior Christy Bruno said, “Our season is off to a great start. We have beaten our win total from last year already and are barely half way through our schedule.” The Lady Falcons will continue to dominate the floor with their positive attitudes and competitive spirit. The boys’ basketball team also has had a highly competitive season and still strives to overcome some hardships. During practices, the boys perform drills continuously without a moments rest. Not a minute is wasted as head coach Jon St.Clair shouts to his team “play hard” immediately after instruction. Their hard work and dedication paid off when the varsity team had a big win over Widefield, the final score: 53 to 46. The boys also had a huge win over rival Sand Creek. Willpower and confidence will help the boys end their season on a positive note.Last, the wrestling team is showing what they’re made of. Regardless of team complications, the remaining Falcon wrestlers are doing remarkably well. On a winning streak, the wrestling team has beaten Mesa Ridge, Sierra, Walsenburg and Limon, and is on their way to regionals. On January 15 at the Pueblo Centennial Tournament, senior Jon Gates had two big wins and senior Joe Robinson took a consolation first. CSML finals will be held on Feb. 26, with regionals Feb. 4 through Feb. 5, followed by the state competition. Those who aptly compete in the regionals will advance to state. With the last half of the winter season to finish, the athletes are showing everyone they can compete with the best.
