Fire tips for homeowners

  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Check smoke detectors every month. Replace batteries twice a year. (Many people do so when they set their clocks either forward or back for daylight savings time.)
  • Don’t overload electrical outlets.
  • Don’t smoke in bed or when you are sleepy.
  • Purchase ABC fire extinguishers and keep one in the kitchen and one in the garage.
  • Prepare an exit plan for your home. Practice it with family members.
  • For wood fireplaces, use a fireplace screen to stop flying sparks. When lighting a gas fireplace, strike the match first, then turn on the gas.
  • Clean the lint screen on your dryer after every use.
  • Have your heating system checked annually.
