On Oct. 4, family, friends, colleagues and clients gathered at the Black Forest Community Center to celebrate the life of long-time Black Forest veterinarian, Dr. Ted Mohr, who died in early August at the age of 73.
A Colorado native, Mohr attended Colorado State University and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1978. After working in veterinary practices in Phoenix and Aurora, Colorado, he purchased the Black Forest Veterinary Clinic in 1994. In a December 2016 Facebook post announcing his retirement, he acknowledged the support of the community in rebuilding the clinic after the original building was destroyed in the 2013 Black Forest fire. “Without you the clinic would never have gotten back up and running, but with your incredible support, together we made the journey back,” he wrote.
Even after retiring, Mohr continued to work part-time at the clinic. On its website, staff wrote, “His dedication to the clients and patients of Black Forest Veterinary Clinic brought him back to practice on a limited schedule. Even in semi-retirement, he remained connected to the clinic and the people and animals who meant so much to him. … His impact reaches far beyond the walls of this clinic. It lives on in the pets he cared for, the families he served, the colleagues he mentored, the community he loved and the clinic he built.”
Mohr enjoyed life outside of his practice as well with interests that included baseball history, antiquing, traveling and spending time with his family and pets.
Those who knew Mohr professionally and personally described him in social media comments as kind, compassionate, intelligent, professional, funny and a perfectionist. They wrote: “Truly one of a kind,” “He had a heart of gold” and “… will be missed beyond words.”
In an Aug. 3 Facebook post announcing his death, clinic staff wrote, “In lieu of flowers, Dr. Mohr had always hoped that at the time of his passing contributions would be made to animal causes.”
