Fire Prevention Week 2026: safe charging is a superpower!

Fire Prevention Week is October 4–10. This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” focuses on the safe charging of lithium-ion batteries. The National Fire Protection Association offers these safety tips.

  • Use the cord and charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer to prevent battery damage and reduce the risk of fire.
  • Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor to keep the battery from overheating.
  • If the battery emits strange smells or smoke, is warm to the touch, makes popping or hissing noises or changes in shape or color, stop using the device immediately and move it away from anything that can catch fire.
  • Unplug devices when they are fully charged to reduce stress on the battery.
  • Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.
  • When on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table, do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes.

Plug in. Power up. Stay safe.
