Recovery Roofing & Restoration a family affair

By Deb Risden

Recovery Roofing & Restoration is a roofing company that goes the extra mile while providing roofing, siding, painting and gutter replacement and repair.

Owner Joshua Sullivan said, “We’re a one-stop-shop and use our own in-house team rather that subcontracting.”

After about six years working in the roofing business, Sullivan told his wife he would like to start his own roofing company. “She wanted to help and was more than willing to resign her job as a social worker and jump on board,” Sullivan said. “I couldn’t do it without her. She runs the back office, and I’m in the field doing estimates and supervising installs and repairs.”

After about a year and a half into business ownership, they experienced a slow winter in the Colorado Springs area. Family members in Houston expressed an interest in joining the business and expanding to Texas. “Three days after we opened in Houston, a big storm came through and we got very busy,” Sullivan said. “I think it was a sign from God that we were doing the right thing.” The company is now in its third year of operation.

As part of providing good customer service from the beginning, Sullivan will meet with a homeowner and do a full inspection of their roof. He then provides an estimate for repairs or replacement. Sullivan said many roofing companies do not provide estimates. “I always write up an estimate for the homeowner,” he said. “They can give my estimate to the insurance company. The insurance company will often accept that estimate. Or sometimes I’m a couple hundred dollars different from what they are paying. That tells me I’m doing the right thing.”

Working with the homeowner’s insurance provider is an important part of the process. Sullivan said he will meet with an insurance adjustor at the homeowner’s home to inspect the roof together. “We come together and form an estimate and an agreement with the insurance company. We figure out what needs to be done together,” he said.

Sullivan said not only do many roofing companies not provide an estimate, homeowners tell him some roofing companies make appointments with the homeowner and don’t show up. “I meet with the homeowner, take the time to write up an estimate and then I’ve got an opportunity to earn their business,” he said.

An important part of good customer service is being honest. “If we feel your roof is not damaged, we’ll tell you,” he said. “I’m not going to try to sell somebody a roof if they don’t need one.”

The company sources all materials locally. “We are locally owned and operated, family run and we really focus on customer service. We treat peoples’ homes like it was our own home,” Sullivan said.

Recovery Roofing will also do minor repairs from hail damage such as replacing window screens and some work inside the home.

It has been well-reported over many years that roofing scammers will come through the area after a hail incident. Sullivan said Colorado has strict regulations in place. He said homeowners should look up the roofing company on the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department to check if they are licensed and insured. Roofing work must also have a permit before work begins. Sullivan also suggests looking at online reviews.

The business name Recovery Roofing & Restoration has double meaning for Sullivan. He said it’s an insurance term used to recover a roof to its pre-storm condition. “Also, at the time we started the business, my father was recovering from cancer. It felt like the right name for our business,” Sullivan said.

When not on rooftops, Sullivan enjoys hiking, rock climbing and outdoor activities.
