Tips for a safe and healthy summer
By Dr. Paul Mayer, co-medical director of El Paso County Public Health
Despite the cool, windy and rainy spring days, warm summer days are well on their way. It’s the perfect time of year to head outdoors and explore all the wonderful activities our community has to offer. Whether you enjoy camping, hiking or biking, there are a few simple things to keep in mind so you can enjoy the outdoors safely.
To stay safe and healthy this summer, here are a few tips:
- Wear sunscreen and use shade to protect yourself from sunburn.
- One way to offer protection from the sun is to wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck.
- Don’t forget to use sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15.
- When outside during dawn and dusk, wear insect repellant to protect yourself from mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illnesses like the West Nile virus.
- Use an EPA-registered insect repellent, such as DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Also, when outside during dawn and dusk, make sure to wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants to avoid being bitten.
- Pay attention to days with extreme heat.
Try to schedule your outdoor activities when it’s coolest, like the morning or evening hours, and don’t forget to pace yourself.
- If you start to feel lightheaded, confused, weak, or faint, get into a cool or shaded area to rest and sip water.
- Remember to stay hydrated and drink more fluids.
No matter what adventures you, your family or your friends have this summer, always remember to stay cool, hydrated and informed before you head outdoors.
