- In the fall of 1621, Native Americans (the Wampanoag tribe) and English settlers celebrated the fall harvest by sharing a meal of deer, corn, shellfish and roasted meat. They also played ball games, sang and danced. It was the beginning of the Thanksgiving holiday.
- The first recorded religious Thanksgiving Day happened two years later in 1623 in Plymouth, when the colonists gave thanks to God for rain after a two-month drought.
- Native Americans were the first to inhabit Colorado. Famous Colorado Native Americans were the Ute, Cheyenne Arapahoe and the Navajo. The Utes communicated, healed the sick and prayed using the Native Scarred Trees. The Navajo were prominent in Southwestern Colorado, The Utes were part of the Pikes Peak area and the Cheyenne Arapahoe lived on the Colorado Plains.
- Colorado is infamous for the Sand Creek Massacre or Battle of Sand Creek ó also called The Chivington Massacre or the massacre of Cheyenne Indians. During the American Indian Wars, on Nov. 29, 1864, 700 troops of Colorado Militia attacked and destroyed the territory of Arapahoe and Cheyenne, in southeastern Colorado The militia killed and mutilated 70 to 163 native Indians ó two-thirds were children and women. The site is known as the Sand Creek Masssacre National Historic Site, which is managed by the National Park Service.
