Although Christmas tree fires are not common, they are more likely to be serious when they do occur. Keep the following safety tips in mind for both fresh and artificial trees.Fresh trees: Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
- Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk to help it absorb water.
- Fill the tree stand with water, and add water daily.
- Within four weeks of being brought into the home, even a well-watered tree should be taken down and promptly disposed of or recycled. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in homes or garages, or placed outside against a structure.
- Keep all trees at least 3 feet away from any heat source such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
- Make sure trees do not block exits.
- Use lights bearing the label of an independent testing laboratory.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
- Never use lit candles to decorate a tree.
- Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
