Colorado is the only state to turn down the Olympics. †In 1972, Denver had been selected as the site for the 1976 Winter Olympics. However, on Nov. 7, 1972, 62 percent of Colorado voters rejected the plan, stating that cost, pollution and a population boom would negatively affect †the city and state.†Bobby Unser, whose family name is iconic in the world of race car driving, was born in Colorado Springs Feb. 20, 1934. †He is the brother of racers Al and Jerry (killed while racing), †the father of Robby Unser, and an uncle to Al Unser Jr. and Johnny Unser. †In 1996, he got lost for two days in the Rio Grande National Forest after his snowmobile broke down. In 2000, he was inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame.
