The Educational Opportunity Foundation of the Black Forest celebrated its 50th year awarding scholarships to students bound for college or a trade school. This year, nine students received $1,500 scholarships toward their education.Nancy Billiard, secretary for the EOF, said they first awarded a scholarship in 1965. ìThe first was $50 to a girl who wanted to go to beauty school,î she said.Six students from Pine Creek High School, one student from Lewis-Palmer High School, one student from the Classical Academy and one homeschooled student received the awards. The scholarships are available to high school seniors who live in the Black Forest, within the EOF’s designated boundaries. ìWe accept Black Forest residents, and accept people with their GEDs, too,î Billiard said. ìIt’s for any education opportunity for kids to go to trade school or college.îThis year’s recipients are Krista Riester, Cody Ade, Michael Phillips, Deaven Strong, Laura Helmreich, Elizabeth Thompson, Megan Meier, Ryan Bennett and Andrew Poe.Poeís plans include trade school; the other recipients plan to attend college.
