D 49 cheerleaders place in top 10 at state competition

Two cheerleading teams from Falcon School District 49 took part in the state cheerleading competition Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 at the Denver Coliseum. The all-girls cheer team from Sand Creek High School took third place among 35 other teams and the Falcon High School coed cheerleaders placed seventh overall in a field of 30.ìThe top four teams were 5A teams and weíre 4A, so weíre a smaller school,î said Mary Ann Wilson, Falcon High School head cheerleading coach. ìBeing smaller is a big challenge for them (the cheer team). They donít have the access to those huge cheerleader gyms like the teams in the Denver Metro area do. We donít have anything like that down here. With only five seniors graduating in 2015, the team was young, Wilson said. ìI think they had an excellent year, being as young as they are and as resilient as they are,î she said. ìI actually had 15 kids on my team that had never been in a (cheerleading) competition before.ìThey learned so much this year that next year we can add to that and be better. Iím very proud of them.î
