More than 165,000 people in southern Colorado are food insecure, meaning they donít know how long the food they have will last and what they will do when it runs out; one in five children in southern Colorado often go to bed hungry. On May 10, Peyton Post Office carriers collected bags of food from residents who left non-perishable items by their mailbox during the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The following cold, snowy Monday volunteers from High Plains Helping Hands picked up the 1,425 pounds of food.Helping Hands would like to thank the Peyton mail carriers for their time and effort in collecting the food and all of you who donated bags of food. Working together, we are truly ìhelping our neighbors in needî by providing food to more than 200 families each month. Helping Hands is the local food pantry for Falcon and Peyton, extending to Calhan, Ramah, Rush, Simla, Matheson, Yoder and Limon. The more than 100 volunteers created 4,700 flyers and attached them to bags that were distributed in neighborhoods. Residents filled the bags with food, and the volunteers collected the bags and helped sort the food, which went to High Plains Helping Hands Food Pantry. Rose Mizer, director of HPHH, is thankful to all the Scouts and their families and to all who donated food. The Scout food drive is the largest one-day donation the pantry receives all year.
