Falcon library grounds to get a liftGirl Scout Sarah Kriner, Troop 118, has high hopes to perk up the entrance of the Falcon Library, and at the same time earn her Gold Award. Sarah, who is 18 and also a member of the Junior ROTC, explained how she would achieve her goal of improving literacy by making the library a pleasant place to visit. She is collecting donations to buy materials for bird houses that would attract different types of birds plus park benches, and install them around the library grounds. She needs a total of $700 to complete the project, and the Exchange Club donated $100 toward Sarahís goal. She has already earned two Scout Journey awards and has been a Scout since kindergarten.Sarah studies Japanese and attends youth group at Grace Community Church.As a People to People ambassador, she will be traveling to the United Kingdom and Ireland this summer. The Gold Award is the highest achievable award in the Girl Scouts.Falcon Highway cleanupOnce again, the Exchange Club of Falcon members gathered for their quarterly cleanup of a 2-mile stretch of the Falcon Highway. As part of the ìAdopt A Roadî program of El Paso County, the club walks the stretch from Meridian Road to Good Fortune Road, picking up debris and litter. The members filled 11 large orange trash bags.Youth of the MonthThe Exchange Club of Falcon recognized Lino Alvarez as Marchís Youth of the Month. Marylou Crabill presented the award, and asked Lino about his most outstanding achievement. Lino said it has been important to him throughout his high school years to make the honor roll each semester. Studying many hours, he met his goal for all semesters, with a final 4.24 GPA. He is also a top volleyball player and active in Younglife at his church. Lino holds the Teacher Choice Award in forensics, engineering, academic letterman and student council letterman. Lino reflects unselfishness and a responsibility to his community.The Exchange Club congratulates Lino Alvarez and Sarah Kriner and wishes them the best for their future.Child abuse prevention monthApril is known as Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Exchange Club of Falcon is supporting El Paso County Sheriffís Office Investigations Division and Victim Assistance Program by donating seven new car seats and more than 60 handmade blankets and quilts. Sam McAfree Acre, coordinator of the Victim Assistance Program, received the items from the club at a meeting in March. Peyton High School hangs Freedom ShrineOn March 12, the student body of Peyton High School gathered to dedicate the schoolís newly installed Freedom Shrine. Twenty historic American documents within the shrine were furnished by the Exchange Club of Falcon. Thanks go to the Ellicott High School Student Council for raising the money to finance the shrine. The display includes the originally written Star Spangled Banner, The Emancipation Proclamation, The original Bill of Rights, The Gettysburg Address and Washingtonís Copy of the Constitution.Andrew Conder, Exchange Club president, presented the plaque to Timothy Kistler, superintendent. To honor the students from Peyton High School who will be serving in the military, Principal Brian Rae announced that one of the wooden plaques will display engraved brass plates with the names of those who serve.Winners of the essay contest ìWhat does freedom mean to me?î were Amanda Benett, 11th grade, and Brandon Wycoff, 12th grade. Club members passed out American flags to all students.
