Students treat seniors to turkey dinner

On Nov.15, the middle school students at the Patriot Learning Center in Falcon hosted the sixth annual Turkey Feast for the seniors of Falcon Senior Services.Jenny Olson, math teacher and event coordinator, said the middle school students are primarily responsible for the event by making the decorations on all the tables and serving their FSS guests. PLC parents provided all the side dishes, while local businesses donated 10 turkeys and two hams, she said. The high school students, who also helped with the event at the PLC, got first dibs on any leftover food, before the students took everything to the Falcon Fire Protection District, Olson said. FFPD firefighters were invited but unable to attend.Shakira Villafane, a sophomore at the PLC and part of the culinary arts program, helped cook the food. ìMy favorite part is greeting people, though,î Villafane said.Gavin Collins, a seventh-grade student, said he enjoys being able to give back to the community through PLC events. ìEvery student helped with everything,î he said. ìI helped make a pumpkin pie and the placemats.îìMany of the kids say that this is their favorite day of the year,î Olson said. The long-time president of the senior services group, Bev Ordon, announced at the dinner that she would be stepping down, making way for someone else to take the reins. Ordon is one of the founders of Falcon Senior Services and has been instrumental in the success of the organization.
