The St. Benedict Catholic Church of Falcon held its first annual Spring Barn Dance and BBQ April 20 at the parish barn in Falcon. All proceeds from the event went toward the construction of a church and school on the almost 40-acre property owned by St. Benedicts, said Doug Burrer, barn dance committee chairman.ìThe parishioners came up with the idea for the dance and barbeque,î said Deacon Lynn Sherman. ìNot many churches have their own barn. We wanted to do this to build up the parish.îSherman, a former law enforcement officer with 34 years of experience, said he feels lucky to be part of the parish and the community as a whole. ìThis party is a way for us to link the eastern and western halves of the county,î he said. ìItís a wonderful mix of parishioners and other community members.îAttendees, which numbered about 300, were treated to a home-cooked meal that included three spit-roasted hogs, potato salad, coleslaw and dessert ñ all purchased from the Simla Frozen Food Locker and prepared by the Croatian brothers and parishioners Anto, Miro and Ivo Lopar.During the social hour, Hannah Burrer and Amy Dalton provided musical entertainment, featuring western instrumentals and the violin and viola.Following the dinner, Sensational Sounds provided Chris Hollanderís disc jockey services, and there was plenty of line dancing.Throughout the evening, cash drawings were held as well as a silent auction for 15 donated baskets.Burrer said the following businesses were integral in the eventís success: Sensational Sounds, Equi-Line, Sun Prairie Stables, Catering 2 Pets, Farmers State Bank, Big R, Walmart, Southern Maid Donuts, American Aviation, Great Cuts, Senior Tax Advisory Services and Heidrichís Colorado Tree Farm Nursery and Curves.Burrer said plans for the second annual St. Benedict Springs Barn Dance and BBQ are in the works.
