Patriot center hosts Turkey Feast

Middle-school students from Patriot Learning Center hosted the fifth annual Turkey Feast for Falcon Senior Services. The feast was held Nov. 9, and the culinary class at PLC cooked six of the 12 turkeys served, said Jenny Olson, event coordinator and PLC teacher. All of the turkeys were donated by local businesses, including Frankieís Too; The State Bank; Walmart of Falcon; BMC Lumber; The Olive Branch and the Rinto family. The dinner also included two pork roasts, sweet potatoes, stuffing; and all the other traditional Thanksgiving fixings, including a variety of desserts. Everything was prepared by the teachers, students and parents, Olson said. Fifty-two students participated and an equal number of seniors attended, she said.Students were paired with seniors from the FSS and escorted them inside from the parking lot, helped them fill their plates, served them drinks and sat with them during the meal, Olson said. Charles Moricle, PLC English teacher, said, ìItís great to see their (the students) sense of self be diffused. Itís not all about them. It gives the kids a chance to forget about what weighs them down.îThe PLC participates in community service events every other Friday, and Olson suggested the feast as one of the events the first year, she said. ìI didnít think it would be an annual thing but the seniors requested it after the first year,î Olson said. ìThis is the highest number of seniors in attendance.îBarb Cirbo, FSS member, said, ìThis is my third year attending, and the kids did a fantastic job. Itís a good learning experience for all.îAfter the feast, attendees were treated to a talent show ñ several PLC students sang or performed skits. Olson said the event was a success and they will continue the Turkey Feast tradition next year.
