On Oct. 14, the Pikes Peak Library District’s Mobile Library unit made its last stop in Falcon. Following the grand opening of the High Prairie Library Oct. 16, the bookmobile will now make more stops in areas surrounding Falcon.The mobile library service was established in 1954 and has been serving Falcon for more than 40 years. Coordinator Jan Meadows recalled serving on the mobile unit in 1987 when they parked in the Diamond Shamrock lot long before there were plenty of other businesses. “We used to get maybe five people,” Meadows said. “It was so cute. We had three little kids that used to come over. The older brother would hold the two little sisters’ hands and carefully cross the highway. We could count on them every week.”Bill Wheeler said he likes working on the unit because it gets him out and about. “I’ve gotten to know some of these people for nine years,” he said. “It’s personal, and you get to know some of these people and their family stories.”Rhonda Wildman, who has worked on the unit for 12 years, agreed. “Watching all the kids grow up has been the best part,” she said. “I’ve seen kids go from babies to kindergarten to high school.”With the exclusion of the Falcon portion of its rounds, the mobile library unit has revamped its schedule to give bigger chunks of time to the busier stops on its route. The changes to the schedule are as follows:
