VINNIE MAC SPORTS CORNER

It’s that time of year again. Where in the world did the summer go? In the past, I have only written about boys’ basketball. I thought it was about time to give the boys’ football team some print. If you have a question or two, give me a call.On Aug. 18, I interviewed the head football coach at Falcon High School – Jason Catron. Here’s a little personal information on him, along with some team insight.Jason and his wife, Erin, have been married for seven years. He attended Dickenson State University in North Dakota for three years, where he was a defensive back on the football team. Jason graduated from Montana Western, and has been in the coaching profession for nine years – all in Falcon. His assistant coaches include Dan Spain, Ed Perez, Corey Anderson, Vance Gale, Chris Anderson, Josh Hall and Jay Peltier. Jay is the only newcomer on the staff this year.Falcon’s record last year was 10-2, and they went to the district quarter finals before being eliminated. They were runner-up in the Southern 3A Conference with an 8-1 record, losing only to Pueblo Central, which was a state qualifier last year. This year, the Falcons have eight returning offensive starters from last year and seven starters on defense. The returning offensive All Conference athletes from last year are quarterback Joey Caron, wide receiver Joe Vela, linemen Garrett Musson, A.J. Pinterpe, Ray Vincent and Nick Willis. The returning defensive All Conference athletes from last year are linebackers Brandon Albright and Chris Rucker, defensive back David Beals, and safety Jade Gale, returning for his third year. Isaac Schoeppey is the returning kicker. At the time of this interview, there were about 110 athletes out for football. The Falcons will be using a 3 – 5 – 3 defensive set most of the time and will be lined up in both the Pro “I” and spread formations on offense. They have several young, promising sophomores who will see some quality time this year. The coach said the defensive line is new this year because of all the graduating seniors. The defensive backfield all returned and will be solid, with Gale commanding the secondary. The offense looks good, with many starters back; they have a lot of talent with an arsenal of weapons. The backfield is deep, from the sophomores to the seniors. All in all, it looks like a promising year for the Falcons, if the defensive line can step into their first starting assignments, and play hard. By the time you read this column, the Falcons will have played their first game, but the NFH deadline was prior to the game.If any of you sports fans out there want to contact me and fill me in on the game with Vista Ridge, I would appreciate it. I will not be able to attend the first game because I will be gone from Sept. 3 to Sept 8.
