Transportation planners seek advice

The El Paso County Public Services Department has begun the process of updating the county’s Major Transportation Corridors Plan and is asking for the community’s ideas, preferences and goals.”We’ll be planning through the year 2040, focusing on transportation choices, how much they will cost and funding sources,” said Victoria Chavez, the county’s principal transportation planner for the update.”The last update was completed in 2004 and led directly to improvements in road maintenance. It identified Woodmen Road and Baptist Road as priority projects that were approved for funding.”The update will focus on the best options for long term right-of-way requirements, connecting urban and rural areas and alternative modes of travel ñ like bicycles ñ on roadway corridors. They also will address expected growth and other issues raised by the community, she said.According to the current Major Transportation Corridors Plan, the population in the unincorporated areas of the county will grow to nearly 240,000 by 2030, with a good portion of that growth occurring in the Falcon area. Other growth hot spots include Fountain and an area east of the U.S. Air Force Academy. As part of the transportation update process, the public services department will host a series of meetings to allow for public input.
