The Peyton Fire Protection District will hold an open house and barbeque Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the district’s fire station on Railroad Street in Peyton’s town center. The community is invited.”We’ll have hamburgers, hot dogs, beans, JELLO and all kinds of good stuff,” said Jack Rauer, Peyton fire chief.Emergency medical technicians will do blood pressure checks, and firefighters will hand out nine-volt batteries for smoke detectors, as well as smoke detectors for citizens who don’t have one.Firefighters will demonstrate search and rescue operations, bunker drills, vehicle extrication and how to use a fire extinguisher.”We thought we’d let community members try on our bunker gear to see how heavy it is,” Rauer said. The fire district will also honor Peyton School District 23’s fourth-grade class and their teacher, Amy Herman. “Last year, for Sept. 11, the class wrote letters thanking the firefighters for responding to dangerous situations and for saving lives,” Rauer said.
