Front Range Equine Rescue hosted an Equine Education Awareness Day at Latigo Trails Heritage Center May 17.The indoor arena was a horse lovers’ paradise of displays and vendors. Programs, most of them hands on, included all aspects of working with horses.Ginger Kathrens, executive director of the Cloud Foundation, was a featured speaker. The Cloud Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of wild horses on public lands and the protection of Cloud’s herd in the Arrowhead Mountains of Montana. Cloud is the famous palomino stallion that has been written about and filmed.Front Range Equine Rescue’s director, Hilary Wood, said this is the third year for the event. She said her group has been involved with Save the Wild Horses since 2005, when they became aware that many of the adopted Mustangs were neglected or abused or sent to slaughterhouses.Wood’s group is now offering two programs: Stop the Backyard Breeders and Trails End. The programs provide financial aid for spaying or neutering horses and humane euthanasia as an alternative to sending unwanted horses to slaughter. Wood is researching national grants so they can come up with a three-year growth plan and more pilot programs to rescue horses and provide viable alternatives for them. For more information about Front Range Equine Rescue or horses available for adoption, call 719-481-1290 or visit www.frontrangeequinerescue.org.
