Girls golfThe Falcon girls’ golf team started their season April 2 with a 9-hole junior varsity match at Antlers Creek in Falcon. First year Coach Kristen Wood said the girls had been practicing daily and they were ready for competition. Amber Steckien is the assistant golf coach.Anchoring the team is senior Lisa Shipley, who said, “(I’m) really confident about this year; we have a good group.” She said she hopes to play golf in college.Junior Lia Weaver is a first-year team member. Weaver said she likes playing with the team because she is “learning more about the sport and seeing all the courses.”The team’s first varsity tournament is April 10 at the Marauder Invitational.Track & fieldTwo track meets were canceled because of weather. However, junior Wes Rickman was making headlines at the Nike indoor national track meet in Landover, Md. Rickman placed fourth in the 2-mile run. The top six finishers in each event made the Nike All-American team.BaseballOn March 29, the Falcons traveled to Castle Rock to play the Castle View team. Senior pitcher Travis Ewing added another win to his credits, as the Falcons won the non-conference game 11-5.The Liberty Lancers swept up the Falcons in the Metro 4A Conference. The final game score was 13-3 and, in a game interrupted by weather, the Falcons were defeated 22-17.In another nonconference contest, the Falcons lost to state ranked Jefferson April 5 by a score of 6-4.A bright note in the Falcons’ season is senior shortstop Cody Solberg, who continues to swing a hot bat. His current batting average is .666, and he has kept the Falcons in the playoff race with 16 RBIs.Falcon athletes win awardsSeveral Falcon basketball players made the Gazette’s year-end list honoring their achievements. Gabe Jackson, Adam Link, Eric Perez and John Kienast received honorable mention in the boys’ regional listing.In girls’ basketball, Amber Wilmore was named to the first team, while Kiah Hicks, Anneliese Rotering, Rose Waskowski and Caitlyn Stell received honorable mention.The 4A Metro League (basketball) honored Gabe Jackson, who was named to the second team, and Adam Link received third team honors. Louis Baumann, John Kienast and Eric Perez received honorable mention.In the 4A girls’ basketball team listings, Amber Wilmore was named to the first team, while Kiah Hicks made the second team. Anneliese Rotering, Rose Waskowsky and Caitlyn Stell received honorable mention.The wrestling team also garnered 4A honors. Senior Zach Roscoe was named to the first team, and Jon McArthur, Jose Cos, Jesse Brown, Ben Angel, Lucas Musseau and Brenden Condon received honorable mention. Wrestling Coach Andy Franko was the 4A Metro “Coach of the Year” for leading the Falcons to their first 4A Metro League title. Franko humbly said, “This isn’t about personal acclaim.” The team also sent four wrestlers to the state tournament, the most since the team moved to the 4A division.
