Lady Falcons fly high

The Lady Falcons defeated Woodland Park Jan. 22 to continue their winning streak. Senior Amber Wilmore, known to her teammates as Willie, once again was named to the Gazette honor roll for scoring 25 points in the Lady Falcons 54-32 win over Fountain-Fort Carson. The team holds a 6-2 record in their league after defeating Liberty High School on Jan. 25. Anneliese Rotering commented that this game would be “our biggest challenge so far. Liberty is very fast.” The Lady Falcons led early but a combination of foul trouble and cold shooting allowed the Lady Lancers to even the game by the half. Liberty came out shooting at the beginning of the second half but the Falcons found their rhythm and the final score was Falcon 55, Liberty 49. Rose Waskowsky scored two three-pointers in the winning effort.Dennis Coates is the team’s coach, assisted by junior varsity coach Steph Kemp and the C Team coach Barb Coffey. Coffey said, “One of the reasons our teams are so successful is that we have a year-round program. I have been working with some of these players since they were in third grade.”While senior Amber Wilmore is a dominant player, the team has plenty of depth. Junior Caitlyn Stell, sophomore Michelle Musseau and freshman Kiah Hicks are frequent scorers. Anneliese Rotering, another senior, said, “This is a team effort. Everyone supports everyone else.” Musseau said, “Most of us aren’t very big, but coach says ‘rebounding is an attitude not a size thing.'”The girls agreed that their coaches work them hard – working on defense and playing a fast-paced game. However, Stell said the coach is “big on academics. If you don’t keep your grades up, you don’t play.”
