Every year, Falcon D 49 softball coach Shawnte Sloan uses a quote to rev up her team. This year’s quote: “Win or lose, you will never regret working hard, making sacrifices, being discipline or focusing too much. Success is measured by what we have done to prepare for the competition.” – John AdamsWith only three seniors to lead this year, Falcon softball kicked off the season with a win against a well-known rival: Sand Creek High School. After a close seventh-inning game, the Lady Falcons pulled out a 3-2 win against the Scorpions.Sophomore Miranda Lyndes, who was the Colorado Springs Metro “freshmen of the year” in the 2006/2007 season, stepped up to the mound as Falcons varsity pitcher and proved to be a great choice.Amber Wilmore, Kaylee Sewell and Rebecca Barak are the only three 2008 seniors on the Lady Falcons team this year. Nothing’s better than starting their final high school softball season with a win against the rival school.Other players to keep an eye on are juniors Brianna Dickinson, Sam Walker, Erica Glen and Sam Flippen. Four sophomores and two freshmen made the team this year as well: Miranda Lyndes, Rebecca Mulligan, Kristin Jakus and Jessica Cabusas are the sophomores. Kindra Lamb and Jordan Walker step up as the only two freshmen on the varsity team. This hard-earned win was accomplished in many ways – summer softball was one. Head coach Shawnte Sloan said, “Summer softball was a great experience. We did several fundamental offensive and defensive drills, and my expectations were met by the ladies working so hard and playing as a team.”Plenty of girls came out this year, which allowed for a junior varsity team as well. “Tryouts went really well, a lot of hard working girls came out this year, so that was awesome to see,” Sloan said.”We have lots of new players this year who are exciting to coach, and I am looking forward to finding roles for all of them. I would love to learn more about who the ladies are as individuals and see them excel in the game of softball.”For team rosters, game updates, routes to all the away games and other information about the 2007/2008 Lady Falcon softball team, visit www.falconsoftball.com.
