Sixteen-year-old Laurel Farinaro, a junior at Falcon High School, won a silver medal in the ladies division of the trap shooting competition at the State Games of America. Her scores: singles -49; handicap ñ 42; total ñ 91.Laurel also was the Colorado state champion in the C class singles and short yardage handicap trap shooting events at the Colorado State Shoot in Delta, Colo., in June.Laurel’s mom, Phyllis, said Laurel started shooting trap at age 13, after an uncle, who is now deceased, bought her a Browning BT-100 shotgun. Laurelís dad, Tony Farinaro, was the commissioner for trap shooting for the State Games this year, which was the first year the State Games offered trap and skeet competition. Tony also serves on the board of directors for the IWL Chapter 34/Pikes Peak Gun Club. And he won a bronze medal in the senior division of trap shooting at the State Games.The Farinaro family has lived in Falcon since 1987.Falcon High School wrestlers Jose Coz and Brenden Condon won a silver and bronze medal, respectively, in the 2007 State Games of America competition held in Colorado Springs in July. Both participated in the folkstyle wrestling competition. Jose, a sophomore at Falcon High School, earned a second place silver medal in the 145 pound category. Brenden placed third, winning a bronze medal, in the 215 pound bracket. More than 10,000 athletes from 47 states competed in the games. The Colorado Springs Sports Corp. organized the event, and the U.S. Air Force Academy was the main venue for the competition. Other venues included the Olympic Training Center, Fort Carson, the World Arena and Colorado College. Colorado Springs will host the State Games of America again in 2009.
