Colorado South East Special OlympicsThe Grace Center at Saint Maryís High School in Colorado Springs held the second annual Special Olympics. Falcon High Schoolís special needs students competed with other area schools. Almost 250 Special Olympic athletes, 50 coaches and 75 event volunteers participated.The first Special Olympics meet took place last year, organized by Lauren Murphy, Falcon High Schools special education teacher.ìThe best part about the program is that they have events for everyone,î Murphy said. ìThey do track and field, 10-25 meter wheelchair races, the 50 meter walk, the 100,200 and 4 x 100 relays, the softball and tennis throw and the running or standing long jump.î(Weíll publish the scores in the NFH May 19 issue.)Girls’ golf – almost finished for the seasonThe girlsí golf team won first place in a tournament held at Antler Creek Golf Course, prevailing over Liberty High School, Lewis-Palmer High School and Saint Maryís High School. The team is coached by Falcon High School counselor Amber Stecklein and special education teacher Lauren Murphy. Team members are juniors Lisa Shipley, Kaylee Sewell and Amber Cunningham; sophomore Amanda Chemodurow; and freshmen Annina McMillan, Zoey Nunn and Shelby Pilling. The girls are 13th out of 15 teams in their league and have two more tournaments left. ìThey are honestly doing much better. They are focusing their efforts into improving their skills.î said Lauren Murphy, co-head coach.
