Spencer Wilkison, daughter of Robert and Lynn Wilkison of Black Forest, was awarded reserve champion in the national 4-H public speaking competition in Denver in early January. Spencer is 18 years old and has been involved in the county 4-H program for nine years. She won the statewide public speaking contest last June.Spencer’s speech, “Equine Assisted Psychotherapy,” focused on the use of equine therapy for troubled youth. She competed against contestants from all across the United States and Canada.Her speech ended with this statement: “Horses know better than anyone that sometimes all you need is a second chance.”
