The American Legion Post 2008 awarded three U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) scholarships, totaling $2,000, to local graduating high school seniors. Recipients from Sand Creek and Vista Ridge high schools’ JROTC were judged on scholastic achievement, leadership, character, citizenship, community activities, work experience; and content and quality of a 600-word essay. Since Falcon High School did not submit applicants, their scholarship went to Vista Ridge. Scholarship winners: Sand Creek High School Jalen Criss — $1,000 Vista Ridge High School Bentura Romero — $500 Joe Tran — $500 Winners were announced during each school’s JROTC award ceremonies. This is the first year American Legion Post 2008 offered scholarships to these schools. They hope to do it again next year and award one scholarship to each school. Scholarships of up to $1,000 are granted based on merit and a written essay. Applicants must take part in the school’s JROTC program as well. The purpose of the JROTC program is to instill in students the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. Winners do not necessarily need to be military bound. Congratulations Jalen, Ben and Joe!
