  Wind turbines

I am a resident of Iowa. For years we have traveled to Colorado on vacation and every year we make a point to stop at Calhan and see the Paint Mines. It is a beautiful and unique area unlike any I have seen elsewhere. A few years back, my Grandson finally got old enough to go on a trip out West with Grandma and Grandpa; and one of our “must see” stops were the Calhan Paint Mines. I was so excited to be sharing such a special natural wonder with our Grandson. So, imagine our dismay when we looked out over the mines and saw wind turbines. REALLY – what were you thinking? Who came up with the idea that an awesome and irreplaceable area like the Paint Mines was a good area for wind turbines? Not only does it ruin the scenic view, but wind turbines do irreparable harm to the wildlife in the area –- not to mention tourism. I know our family will never visit there again. From now on we will take the interstate straight to Denver. Not only have you lost tourism dollars –- but you have defiled a rare natural area.

Now I’m reading how sick some of the people and animals in the area have become since the wind turbines have been built. You should be ashamed of yourself. As most Moms –- overcome with frustration at one time or another have said, “What the heck is WRONG with you?”

  Electoral college

As an avid reader of The New Falcon Herald and resident of Black Forest and voting American citizen, I need to respond to the article by Lindsey Harrison, “Colorado Jumps on National Popular Vote Bandwagon.”

The reason for the Electoral College (A little perspective and accuracy)

There are 3,141 counties in the United States. Trump won 3,084 of them. Clinton only won 57. There are 62 counties in New York State, of which Trump won 46, while Clinton only won 16.

Clinton won the popular vote (supposedly, though still in question but let’s assume true) by 1.5 million votes.

In the 5 counties that make up New York City (Brooklyn, Queens, Richmond, Bronx, and Manhattan) Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. Clinton only won 4 of these counties. Trump won Richmond.

Therefore, these 5 counties alone more than accounted for Clinton winning the popular vote of the entire country.

These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles. The United States is comprised of 3,797,000 square miles. When you have a country that encompasses nearly 4 million square miles of territory, it is ludicrous to even suggest that the vote of those that encompass a mere 319 square miles should dictate the outcome of the National Presidential Election. Or that the vote of 57 out of 3,141 counties should determine the outcome of said election.

THAT is the reason for the electoral college!
